An intranet is a private computer network to securely share organization's information (contacts,
invoices, appointments, tasks, projects, etc) among employees.
Intranets allows your company to share and manage its information through the web browser.
It is as any other software that is tipically used to manage information, but it has
a web interface. This brings some key benefits over traditional management software:
- Ubiquity: An intranet can be used from everywhere, not only from office. You only need a web browser and Internet connection
- Centralization: Intranet is centralized in a server in such a way that you don't need to install anything else in computers
- Platform independence: Any computer with a web browser can work with an Intranet. Even PDAs and smart phones are able to.

Ubiquity is very powerful. It means that you can access all the
information not only from your office, but from home, the airport, an hotel, and everywhere you want. Is this a source of insecurity? Not really. Intranets can be protected with
authentication
and
firewalls
making it as secure and reliable as all the web services you use daily.
Centralization implies that an intranet is easily maintained: Install a new intranet version on the server, and everybody has been automatically upgraded. Forget to slowly upgrading all the PCs in the company one by one. And the same applies for the hardware: upgrade server hardware and everybody will notice a faster responsiveness, even using the same machines.
Platform independence is because intranet interface is a recognized standard, the web. Your company can use the most hetereogeneus computer park, and all of them will work seamlessly with the Intranet without having to adapt nothing. That means that the Intranet will work not only for the present platforms, but also for future ones!
The process of attempting to verify the identity
of somebody, tipically with a name and a password.
A security device which is configured to permit
or deny connections between computer networks.
